    Dinner For One

He slammed the front door behind him and wondered why the lights were out.

On the table stood two candles, flames dancing.

His wife came out of the kitchen, wearing a dress.

    Unusual.

“Hi gorgeous,” she said, with lipsticky smile.

    “You alright, love?”

“I thought we could celebrate tonight – you know – it’s that time?”

    Oh.

    That time of the month.

He wished she’d stop talking about making babies.

“Listen, love. I’m sorry – I’ve gotta meet Gary in a minute at the Lamb and Flag.”

He slung his bag on the floor, walked past her to the kitchen and grabbed a spoon to sample the casserole cooking on the hob.

“I thought I told you,” he said through a mouthful of beef and onion. “Wait up for me, eh?”

He winked, and gave her a kiss on the cheek, transferring sauce to her face.

Her eyes welled up with tears.

He shrugged apologetically and walked back towards the front door.

He didn’t want to miss the football.

Now that would be a tragedy.
